Covid vaccine prevents infection, severe disease in kidney dialysis patients

Toronto: Some studies have shown that individuals with kidney failure and undergo a weaker dialysis of antibody response after vaccination Covid-19, but new research shows that the individual’s immune response is still able to protect against SARS-COV-2 infection and severe diseases  In this study, published in Jasn, the individual who has received a single covid vaccine dose is 41 percent less likely to be infected with SARS-COV-2 and 46 percent less likely to develop severe Covid-19 that requires hospitalization or leading to death .

Those who received two doses were 69 percent and 83 percent less likely to be infected or experienced severe illnesses On the other hand, the risk of hospitalization in a group that is not vaccinated is 52 percent and the mortality rate is 16 percent, while the risk of hospitalization in the 2-dose group is 30 percent and a 10 percent mortality rate.

“Patients in maintenance dialysis often have suppressed the immune system and many cannot isolate because they must attend dialysis treatment three times per week at the center of dialysis,” said Matthew Oliver, from the University of Toronto in Canada “Reducing hospitalization and death is very important in this population because around two-thirds of these patients were hospitalized and 1 in 4 died when infected by SARS-COV-2 at the beginning of the pandemic,” he added.

For this study, the team analyzed health records for 13,759 individuals who received maintenance dialysis between December 21, 2020 and 30 June 2021 – 17 percent of whom were not vaccinated and 83 percent of them had received at least 1 dose of MRNA Covid-19 vaccine They were found there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of vaccines between age groups, dialysis modes, or vaccine types (pfizer-bionech or modera).

“Our results show that 2 doses of MRNA vaccines significantly protect this population, prevent a lot of hospitalization and death and reduce the burden on patients, families, and health care systems,” Oliver said “The effectiveness of vaccines is less than seen in the study in the general population but still provides substantial protection,” he said Now it is recommended that all adults and adolescents, especially those who immunocompromised, receive the third dose of covid vaccines to ensure optimal immune response.
