A tactical chopper conveying Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat and 13 others slammed soon after take-off today in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force said.
Five bodies have been found from the accident site and two people have been taken to emergency clinic with serious consume wounds. A hunt is on for seven others.
General Rawat’s better half, his Defense Assistant, security commandos and Air Force faculty were among 14 individuals ready.
“An IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat ready, met with a mishap today close to Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been requested to learn the reason for the mishap,” tweeted the Air Force.
General Rawat had taken a departure from Delhi to Sulur recently and that flight show had recorded nine individuals. The departure from Sulur included five more, perhaps team.
The accident occurred in the Nilgiris not long after the Russian-made Mi-17 V5 chopper took off from the military base in Sulur in Coimbatore for the Defense Staff Services College in Wellington.

General Rawat, 63, assumed responsibility as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff in January 2019.
