Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two common conditions among women of reproductive age. Both of these conditions have several common symptoms such as severe menstruation, bleeding between periods, and infertility. But PCOS and Endometriosis are two very different conditions, and a woman can have both simultaneously.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder in which ovaries produce androgen in an amount higher than normal, male hormones. Endometriosis, on the other hand, is a disease in which the endometrium (tissue lining the inside of the uterus or uterus) grows outside your uterus or uterus, causing severe pelvic pain.Continue to read to learn more about these two conditions, and how to distinguish them.

PCOS: Symptoms, Treatment, And More

Nisha Kapoor, Director and HOD, Gynecology Obstetrics and Laparoscopy Advanced Gynae, Marengo QRG Hospital, Faridabad, explained, “Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder where hormone imbalances lead to various skin and hair problems, weight gain irregularity, subfertility and metabolic problem. “

The mainstay treatment is weight loss through lifestyle changes in the form of regular diet and exercise interventions. “The exercise involves daily aerobic exercise for about 30 minutes and diet depends on BMI. In terms of diet, general guidelines are low carbohydrates, low -fat diet with lots of fiber and sufficient protein. Avoiding junk food is very important,” Dr. Kapoor is declared.

According to him, pharmacotherapy is needed depending on the clinical manifestations listed above.Dr. Kapoor notes, “Women with PCOS need to understand that it is an endocrine disorder that mostly manifests women with permanent lifestyle and unhealthy diet habits that lead to weight gain which further worsen hormone imbalances so that it leads to the cycle of demons.”

“PCOS is not a disease and only finds polycystic ovaries in ultrasound should not be a reason to worry if there is no clinical manifestation that can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” he added.

Do not ignore severe menstrual cramps

Mild menstrual cramps that do not interfere with routine activities and can be managed with mild analgesics, yoga, etc. are normal. If the pain during the period is severe enough that causes inability to daily routines, especially if it has appeared over the past few months, it should not be ignored because it can mean some underlying problems such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, PIDs, endometriosis, etc.

PCOS, PCOD, Endometriosis: Know the difference

Kapoor said that PCOS and PCOD are a term that can be exchanged, but endometriosis is a different disease. PCOS does not cause pain which is a major symptom in endometriosis.

In women with endometriosis, ovarian cysts filled with blood are formed in the ovaries and adhesion develop between pelvic organs, intestines and urinary systems. This causes chronic pelvic pain which becomes more severe during the period, subfertility, menstrual disorders, etc. He explained.

So, if pelvic pain is your main symptom, it can be endometriosis, not PCOS.

Unlike PCOS, endometriosis is not caused by hormones or hormone imbalances. In women with endometriosis, the production of the hormone ovarian is usually normal. However, these conditions can be influenced by hormonal imbalances. Endometriosis cannot be ruled out with ultrasound.

Symptoms of PCOS: excess androgen, no pain, maybe severe period, maybe long bleeding, bleeding between periods, infertility.

Symptoms of endometriosis: normal hormone, pelvic pain, maybe severe period, may be long bleeding, bleeding between periods, infertility.

Both PCOS and endometriosis have several common symptoms, but for very different reasons.

Because endometriosis is characterized by inflammation in the pelvis, treatment of focus on reducing inflammation. Treatment usually includes surgery or medicine. Women with endometriosis may be recommended dietary diet.
