We will soon come to two years since Queen’s Gambit landed on Netflix who scored many awards for Netflix to be one of their limited series of all-time limited and changing large audiences to chess lovers. Season 2 is not on the road but can the game? The new trademark archiving shows possible.
Asked on March 2, 2022, the new trademark at issue is only for “The Queen’s Gambit” but where it is interesting to us is the fact that under registered goods and services “game software that can be downloaded”.If it’s not enough in the nose, the secondary items and services listed are for the following “Entertainment services, namely, provide online computers, electronics and video games; provide temporary use of interactive games that cannot be downloaded”It was all but confirmed that the game around Netflix’s Queen’s Gambit was on my way to the Netflix game. But what can happen?
Smart money, of course, will be a branded chess game clone complete with visualization and maybe even a voice line from the Netflix Show itself. This game will not have the same thunder as when the first series came out. On November 2020 it was reported that the sale of chess boards soared and the traffic to the chess.com website bunged.
The traffic surge led to Chess.com takes advantage of newly found popularity in chess by offering new opponents in Beth Harmon’s form at certain points in his life for you to play.Of course, beyond the submission of a trademark, there is no official confirmation that anything is on the way from Netflix first. By playing games into a bigger part of Netflix’s future (they have bought three studios in less than 6 months), we will hope to see many Tie-in games move forward.
You might be wondering whether Netflix can even produce chess games. Most chess is considered to be in the public domain even though there are still many debates around other aspects of copyright and games. With the exception of two foreigners’ entries, Netflix’s efforts so far mostly rely on attractive IP and new games from other gaming studios. Whether it’s from people like Krispee Street from the Frostypop game to destroy the remaster from the Pycpok or Asphalt Xtreme from Gameloft.
Do you want to jump back to the chess world at Netflix if they release a new game? Tell us in the comments.
